Packaging Drupal for XEN, and... ?

We’re working to package up Drupal as a standalone Drupal installation that’s turn key on a virtual server. We already do something similar for our hosted services (we run dozens of servers full of Drupal XEN-based VPS on our infrastructure).

What we’re thinking about doing is providing a speed optimized image on XEN. VMWare and Parallels ports can be provided if people want it. That’s the purpose of this post.

Also, we plan on providing it on CentOS. But I know Ubuntu and Debian - again if there is demand.

We plan to maintain this distribution over time, so you can have “Drupal on demand” in a VE without having to tie yourself to a provider.

This is going to be a skillfully maintained version of Drupal suitable for running on any XEN server. It will include Memcached, APC, etc. Basically, this is a speed optimized version which you could take right to production if you wanted to.

We’ve discussed this at length with Boris at Bryght and we all agree it needs to happen asap for the community.

What specifically do people want from this project? Is CentOS enough, or do we want Debian and Ubuntu or others? We would like feedback for the community for this project, to make sure we deliver what people want.

Please, post comments! Thanks.

Great idea

Great idea… I normally run Centos for production, so in my mind that’s fine.
